JPA Designer is a comprehensive program for assessing heat loss and interstitial condensation risk. The program can be used at the design stage and to demonstrate compliance with the energy conservation requirements of Building Regulations and Technical Standards. JPA Designer has been approved by the BRE for SAP calculations.
As JPA Designer is a modular program, you need only purchase the modules you require. When you purchase a module we provide you with the software on CD-ROM, personalised access code for the program you have purchased and a user manual: the CD-ROM also contains useful data on insulation products and other building materials. You will be entitled to three months free technical support.
The following table provides guidance to the features of each module:

System requirements
JPA Designer requires a PC running MS Windows 98 SE2 or higher, with a CD-ROM drive and 8MB available disk space. The PC will require an Internet connection if you intend to update the boiler database from the BRE website.
SAP 2005 module The changes to the Building Regulations which came into force on 6th April 2006 introduced a new version of the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP version 9.8) and replace existing compliance methods with the Dwelling Emission Rate. The JPA Designer SAP 2005 module implements that new version of SAP.
The SAP 2005 module has been approved by BRE for calculations to SAP 2005 for demonstrating compliance with Part L 2006 and costs £350 + VAT per licence.
From 1st January 2006 anyone purchasing the SAP 2005 module can request a key code for the existing SAP module (SAP 9.7). The current module (SAP 9.7) will still be available for users in Scotland who do not require the SAP 2005 module.
SAP RI Module
In addition to calculating SAP ratings and testing compliance with Parts L and J of building regulations the SAP RI Module tests for compliance according to Part L1 of the building regulations of the Republic of Ireland.
The Module checks against the Elemental Method, Overall Heat Loss method and the Heat Energy Rating method and indicates clearly whether the dwelling meets the requirements of the regulations
Uvalue Standard Module Uvalue Standard calculates U-values for roofs, walls and intermediate floors, using the combined method to calculate the effect of repeating thermal bridges. Performing a calculation is simply a matter of defining the layers in the building element - a process made easier by the program's comprehensive database of materials.
A 'variable layer' feature makes it easy to construct 'what-if' scenarios to evaluate the effect of design changes on the U-value. The program's comprehensive print-outs can be customised with your project and contact details.
Uvalue Enhanced Module
Uvalue Enhanced adds ground floor U-value calculation to the functionality of U-value Standard. The program uses the ISO 13370 method and can calculate U-values for solid and suspended ground floors, including beam and block constructions, and allows for the effect of whole-of-floor or perimeter insulation.
View a sample print out of a floor U-value calculation.
Uvalue Professional Module 2003
Uvalue Professional 2003 performs condensation risk analysis using the methods in BS EN ISO 13788 and BS 5250:1989, as well as carrying out U-value calculations using the combined method and ground floor U-value calculations to ISO 13370. As the module uses the same layers as a U-value calculation it is easy to analyse heat loss and condensation risk.
By altering the environmental settings you can test elements under a variety of climatic conditions to identify potential problems. The program produces graphs and full print-outs of calculations and includes environmental data for 20 sites within the UK.

For full information about methods of condensation risk analysis visit our briefing page.
The Materials Database
To make U-value calculations easier the U-value module includes two databases of building materials and cavities - a system database and an extensible user database. You can easily include a material or cavity from either database in your calculation. The database is pre-loaded with generic materials and products from listed manufacturers and you can use it to store details of materials you regularly use.
JPA Windlift calculates wind loads on flat roofs to determine the requirements for fixing components such as waterproofing membranes and insulation boards. The program uses the standard method described in BS 6399 Part 2: 1997 to establish a single worst-case value for wind uplift forces.
To simplify the calculation process JPA Windlift includes the BREVe module which calculates the topographic and wind speed data required for the wind load calculation.

Our current thermal calculation program (JPA Designer) has several predecessors.
JPA Uvalue A U-value calculation program, which used the proportional area method and perimeter area method for calculating U-values and the BS 5250:1989 method of interstitial condensation risk analysis. Those calculation methods are no longer acceptable under the latest editions of Approved Document L and Technical Standard J.
The program is no longer available.
JPA SAP v2
A SAP calculation program using the 1998 edition of SAP. JPA SAP also checked dwellings for compliance with Building Regulations and Technical Standards using the Elemental, Target U-value and Energy Rating methods. Calculations based on the 1998 edition are only acceptable in Northern Ireland.
The program is no longer available.
JPA Nondwell
A program for testing compliance with Approved Document L for buildings other than dwellings. The program used the Elemental and Target U-value methods. Those calculation methods have changed in the latest editions of Approved Document L. Calculations based on the previous edition are no longer acceptable.
The program is no longer available.
JPA Thermal
A DOS-based program for U-value calculation and condensation risk analysis.
The program was superseded by JPA U-value.
JPA GFU
A DOS-based ground floor U-value calculator. The program was superseded by JPA U-value.
Upgrades
The 2002 revisions to Approved Document L (England and Wales) and Technical Standard J (Scotland) introduced new calculation methods for U-values and a new edition of SAP (the government's Standard Assessment Procedure). In response to those changes we launched a new program, JPA Designer, which incorporated the new calculation methods.
Until 31st December 2003, users of JPA U-value and JPA SAP were able to upgrade to JPA Designer at a discounted price. Now any user upgrading from JPA U-value and JPA SAP to JPA Designer must pay the standard price for the software. Users may, of course, continue to use JPA U-value and JPA SAP without upgrading, but should be aware that U-value and SAP calculations produced by those programs do not comply with the requirements of Building Regulations and Building Standards.
Until 30 September 2006, users of JPA Designer - SAP module (in Enland and Wales) were able to upgrade to JPA Designer - SAP 2005 Module at a discounted price. Now, any user upgrading from JPA Designer - SAP 2005 module must pay the standard price for the software. Users may of course, continue to use JPA Designer - SAP module without upgrading, but should be aware the SAP calculations produced by those programs do not comply with the requirements of Building Regulations and Building Standards.
Existing users of JPA Designer - SAP module (in Scotland) are able to upgrade at a discounted price of £95+VAT, to JPA Designer-SAP 2005 module until 1 August 2007.
Why not download a demonstration version of JPA Designer to see how you might benefit from upgrading. Alternatively you may contact us at software@jpatl.com or tel: 0191 281 8393 to discuss upgrade options.
